Films For A Rainy Day

I just love a rainy day, there's something about being safe and cosy indoors, hearing the tapping on the window and knowing there's going to be a day of comfort ahead. That's if you don't need to pop out because you've got no milk, or worse... a good film to watch.

That's why we need to be stocked up ready for these rainy weekends, when there's nothing to do but wrap yourself silly in blankets, hear the kettle whistle and rustle through a bag of sticky popcorn. It doesn't matter if it's just you and the dog - it's going to be a killer night.

I've listed a few films, with all different genres to make sure you can stock up on a great variety - so you won't be umming and ahhing over which film to pick. If you're more of a Netflix junkie - head this way. Otherwise, let's get stuck in...

1. Amelie

I've only seen this film once, but it is an absolute beauty. Directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, this romantic comedy is a lighthearted delight. Amelie lives in Paris, and you can watch her journey as she helps those around her but just so happens to find love along the way. I'm not a fan of subtitles but with this film, it doesn't matter in the slightest. If you're in love with Paris, quirky individuals and a dream like experience - this one's for you.

2. 500 Days Of Summer

It's pretty simple really - this film follows the story of a woman who doesn't believe in love and a man who falls head over heels in love with her. It's an artistic film with a bit of an edge to it, some scenes are almost as if you're in a dream. If you're a fan of The Smiths (if not, you absolutely will be after watching this) and eager to watch something more than your average rom-com, you're in for a treat.

3. Breakfast At Tiffany's

For the ultimate classic, this film needs to be on your shelf - waiting for the rain to pour. Beautiful Audrey Hepburn (goals) stars as a New York socialite, living the high life and becomes interested in the new guy on the block. You'll fall so in love with her character and her ginger cat, Cat.

4. Before I Go To Sleep

I recently watched this film after a night the cinema has sold out and we were stood outside wondering what else we could do with our lives. We decided to head to the nearest Tesco and treat ourselves to a DVD purchase and Mary Berry's chocolate brownie. In this psychological thriller, not everything is as it seems... Nicole Kidman plays a woman who wakes up every day and remembers nothing. If you love a film with twist and turns, this could be the film of choice and a little something different than your usual choice.

5. UP

Of course I had to throw in a magical Disney film. UP was a no-brainer, and if you're wanting a relaxing, care-free day ahead - what better way to spend it? A grumpy old man named Carl goes on a mission, fueled by the colourful balloons attached to his house, a talking dog and a chubby kid. If that doesn't make your happy then unfortunately I can't help you!

I'd love to hear your favourite movies for a rainy day!

  1. Duh, do not include Up! in this list. It's one of the most heartbreaking and sad movies I have EVER seen! But 500 days of summer is beautiful.

  10. I love that this list includes some of my absolute favourites! Amelie is an amazing film! i'd also suggest An Education for all the sweet Parisian feels, Notting Hill for classic Hugh Grant comedy, Moulin Rouge for a good old sing along and American Beauty for another hauntingly beauty satirical American psychological film. 20. I found Up really depressing, I don't know when children's films got so sad and deep. I miss Toy Story. Great post, love Breakfast at Tiffany's, or any Audrey film really x
