5 Steps To Start Your Digital Marketing Career

I kind of fell into digital marketing and I absolutely love it. I can't imagine doing anything else now - and it all started with this little blog of mine. Without it I definitely wouldn't have gained my love for writing, photography and social media - so, thanks OJ, I owe you one.

I currently work in social media and copywriting for a radio station; and although it is a hugely high paced environment, it's incredibly fun too. Don't get me wrong, I am by no means an expert in this field of work - I'm simply sharing my thoughts and experience for those with an interest in digital marketing.

Areas of digital marketing include:
  • Social media
  • Blogging
  • Content creation
  • Public relations
  • Research
  • Email marketing
  • Mobile marketing
  • Search engine optimisation
  • Web design and development

The digital world is growing - fast!

If you're interested in digital marketing, now is the perfect time to get started. There is a huge demand in this career path; this is due to the expansion of digital products and people seeing the value in social media, video and online marketing.

So, on to the tips...

Learn and continue to learn

As digital marketing is a fairly new thing, this means trends, statistics and technology are always developing. So for example, if you work in social media like I do, you should be researching and keeping up with the latest news. You can do this by following online websites such as Entrepreneur or Social Media Today. And if you're wondering about how something works, Google it - seriously, every answer you need is out there. It's all about constantly learning!

Get creating and experimenting

Experience is essential, whether you have studied a marketing course or have successfully run your own online platform. Many people who blog do not realise that they are actually creating a digital marketing strategy by having an online presence, building an audience and creating content. This is a great skill to have on your CV and something that gives your future employers something to talk about - embrace it!

It's also useful to gain experience in other aspects of digital elements. This includes photography, use of film equipment, film and photo editing and more. The more digital and media skills you can gain, the better. Video is a MASSIVE and you have probably noticed that Facebook has turned into a place filled to the brim with them, that's because it's the future - don't worry, cat compilations will always be a thing. Video is incredibly powerful and also gives your product the chance to be shared possibly thousands of times. Experiment with different platforms, build a social media page, write content and learn about trends and tricks online.

Gain experience in a real working environment

Although I haven't had a lot of work experience and was lucky to get the job I have today - there are numerous ways you can gain experience. Whether you get a placement at a local marketing company, run your own online brand, do guest posts on websites or simply study your butt off - this is all going to look great on your CV. Remember though, although some employers will be looking for qualifications, it is not necessary.

I did work experience with an events company and also a brand and design company. This was incredibly useful and I would recommend anyone interested in digital marketing to get out into a real working environment. It will be a real test to see if you enjoy it.

Get talking to like minded people

It's who you know most of the time - so surround yourself with talented and interesting people who can teach you a thing or two. Chat to people, attend workshops or meet-ups and learn off of each other - you never know, it may lead to something pretty special!

I really hope this was helpful for those interested in digital marketing, drop me a comment below if you'd like to see any more career posts or tweet me.

  19. Digital marketing is often referred to as 'online marketing', 'internet marketing' or 'web marketing'. The term digital marketing has grown in popularity over time, particularly in certain countries. In the USA online marketing is still prevalent, in Italy is referred as web marketing but in the UK and worldwide, digital marketing has become the most common term, especially after the year 2013..
