Taking A Step Back

Life goes by so fast and sometimes you can forget to take a step back and think about what you really need and what's important. I often find myself becoming disappointed in myself, getting frustrated or feeling like I'm useless and can't improve. It can be easy to let this drown you, rather than taking a step back and thinking about what's going on around you and most importantly being happy.

Everyone gets into the mindset that things can't change or that you can't be a better person. Rather than doubting yourself every time, listen to what your mind and body is telling you. If you need a break, have a break. Book some deserved time off or cancel on the day out you planned, it's ok to slow down and take some time for yourself. Put on your joggers, read for hours, spend half a day at your favourite coffee shop, sleep in until 12pm, don't let anyone tell you that's wrong. Maybe you need that.

This photo was taken on a day I was especially cranky, and I soon realised that's because I haven't been looking at the positives or thinking about what makes me happy. I sat with my coffee in my favourite coffee shop, thinking, something has to change.

In the snap, I'm wearing my new Daniel Wellington black Sheffield watch*, alongside a rose gold cuff*. It's beautiful, and it got me thinking - I really want to do more personal style posts in the future, while also playing about with fashion. But ultimately, I'm unsure in the direction I want my blog to go down, so that's another thing I need to take a step back and think about.

If you're feeling a little stuck in a rut, whether that's with your blog, work, relationships or your mental health, here's a few things to think about, while taking a step back.

What are your goals

Some of us just live every day without thinking about the future, then weeks pass and you realise you could have done so much in that time. By sitting down and planning goals, you can really think about what you want out of life and where you see yourself in the future.

Think of the positives

It's easy to think of the negatives and moan about every little thing that is wrong with your life. Stop stop stop! Looking on the downside of things won't get you anywhere, remain positive. Put motivational quotes on your walls, set your phone background to your favourite saying and when life throws you a curveball, change your perspective on the way you view it.

How can you become the best version of yourself

What do you enjoy, what are your skills and who do you want to be? You can do anything you put your mind to. Nobody is born with a perfect skill, it comes with time and a lot of passion. Work hard and learn from your mistakes. You can always start again.

Taking a break

Know when your mind and body needs a break. If you're poorly, don't feel guilty for allowing your body to rest. If you're feeling anxious, it's ok to spend the weekend focusing on yourself.

"If you don't like where you are, change it, you are not a tree." - Jim Rohn

Your happiness is what's important, if you don't like what you're doing or people are getting you down - change it. Work at your dreams and be mindful of your actions.

Remember others

Although it is important to focus on your happiness, it can also be easy to overlook other people's needs. Perhaps a friend or family member could do with someone to talk to, or that stranger on the bus may simply need a smile. Be aware of your surroundings, be kind and be there for people who may be in need.

When's the last time you took a step back?

  1. I really love this! I feel like I'm constantly on the go and it can be exhausting. I definitely need to take more time to myself, and being there for others always makes you feel amazing too. xx

  6. Love the quote so much! Never heard it before.
Totally get where you're coming from; I have these crises every couple of months, at which point I have to step back and take stock, assessing the next direction!
Also I adore your watch :) xx

  7. I really love this post! That quote is brilliant, so true and gave me a little giggle. I'm definitely feeling the same at the moment, I find it too easy to focus or get down about the things that I don't like about myself or the things that aren't going so well and I'm good at dwelling on these and even though I try to fix/change them I don't really change my attitude, which is more important anyway!

I'm definitely one of those hippocrits that say 'do whatever you love' and 'happiness solves everything' and yet I find myself being unhappy most of the time - these next few weeks definitely need to be the time of reflection and figure out what I want the New Year to entail!

  8. 1) LOVE your blog 2) I love little moments that you step back in and just think and rest, I feel like that's always so nice. That quote is too perfect and something that should be framed honestly.

  11. It's your post that I'm going to hang on my wall ahah! Loved it - it resonates so much as I've been feeling a bit down these last months. I'm under the weather constantly and feel like I'm too lazy to do any planning sometimes. It is so frustrating! I suppose I just have to remember these simple pieces of advice :) Btw, totally going to give a try to more personal posts like this one on my blog! x
